Helmsley Building

The Helmsley Building stands directly in the path of Park Avenue, creating a dramatic experience where city traffic flows through the very base of the structure. Two S-shaped ramps carry vehicles off the street and through massive stone portals in the building's lower levels, effectively turning the skyscraper into an elevated gateway. This bold engineering design was intentional, serving as the northern anchor for the massive Terminal City complex that rose around Grand Central Terminal in the early twentieth century.
