Jerome Mansion

The Jerome Mansion once stood at the southeast corner of Madison Avenue and East 26th Street as the most extravagant private home in New York City. Built between 1859 and 1865 for the financier Leonard Jerome, the six-story structure rejected the city's standard brownstone design in favor of a flamboyant Parisian Second Empire style. Its exterior featured a high slate-shingled mansard roof, while the interior was legendary for its white and gold ballroom equipped with fountains that dispensed champagne and cologne. The mansion even contained its own private theater capable of seating six hundred guests.
