The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art stands as the only dedicated art museum in the world focused entirely on the LGBTQIA+ experience. Its origins trace back to a single, bold event in May 1969, when founders Charles Leslie and Fritz Lohman transformed their private SoHo loft into a gallery. They displayed homoerotic works to an audience of two hundred people, defying a time when simply possessing such imagery could lead to arrest. This initial act of defiance blossomed into a permanent institution that now stewards a collection of over thirty thousand objects.
