The Broken Kilometer is a permanent installation created by the artist Walter De Maria in nineteen seventy-nine. It occupies a ground floor space on West Broadway and consists of five hundred solid brass rods. Each rod measures exactly two meters in length and five centimeters in diameter. If these rods were laid end to end, they would form a continuous line measuring exactly one kilometer.
