The New York Earth Room

You are approaching 141 Wooster Street, a nondescript loft building in the heart of SoHo. Inside, on the second floor, lies an installation that defies the commercial and fast-paced nature of its neighborhood. This is the New York Earth Room, a work of art created by Walter De Maria in 1977. It consists of 280,000 pounds of soil, spread 22 inches deep across 3,600 square feet of gallery space. While the streets outside are filled with the noise and bustle of urban life, this room offers a deliberate, quiet sanctuary. The space remains unchanged, holding the same earth and the same atmosphere for nearly five decades.
