Joey Ramone Place

The street sign you see high above the corner of the Bowery and East Second Street is famous for being the most stolen sign in all of New York City. Because fans of the punk rock pioneer Joey Ramone kept unscrewing and walking off with the original markers, the city eventually moved the sign to a position nearly twenty feet above the ground to keep it out of reach. Each time a replacement was installed at a lower height, it would quickly disappear, forcing the city to keep a dedicated supply of new signs in reserve for this specific location.
