Department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker commissioned this monument to honor the soldiers and sailors who returned from the First World War. He specifically chose this location because it served as the site for the city's official welcome-home celebrations for those returning troops in nineteen eighteen. The structure serves as a dedicated site for annual Veterans Day ceremonies where the city's parade begins its journey up Fifth Avenue.
