Two hundred eighty-seven Broadway is known to many locals as the leaning landmark. Completed in eighteen seventy-two, this cast-iron building was designed by architect John B. Snook to reflect the high-fashion French Second Empire style, complete with a dramatic mansard roof and ornate iron cresting. Its prestige was such that it was among the first structures in the city to feature an Otis passenger elevator, a modern marvel for the office tenants and banking houses that originally occupied its floors.
