Fleming Smith Warehouse

You are standing before the Fleming Smith Warehouse, a building that defies the drab reputation of industrial architecture. Completed in eighteen ninety-two, it was commissioned by merchant Fleming Smith, who clearly desired something more than a utilitarian box for his storage needs. He hired the prominent architect Stephen Decatur Hatch, who had previously designed other works for him, to create a facade that serves as a decorative landmark rather than just a place of commerce.
