The building you see before you, officially known as Hook and Ladder Company 8, operates as an active firehouse while serving as a global landmark of cinematic history. Built in 1903 in the ornate Beaux-Arts style, the station was originally twice its current width and featured two massive arched bays for horse-drawn fire apparatus. Its footprint was dramatically altered in 1913 when the city widened Varick Street, a municipal project that forced the building to be sliced in half. This reconstruction left the firehouse with the singular, deep-set apparatus bay that fans of the Ghostbusters franchise instantly recognize today.
