The Flea Theater began in 1996 with a singular founding goal to raise a joyful hell in a small space. Founders Jim Simpson, Sigourney Weaver, Mac Wellman, and Kyle Chepulis established the company to foster experimental American theater away from the commercial pressures of the major Broadway houses. The venue earned a reputation for intimacy, where audiences could experience the unamplified human voice or witness a performance with such proximity that the boundary between spectator and stage nearly dissolved.
