9–11 East 16th Street

Completed in eighteen ninety-six, this building serves as a striking example of Sullivanesque architecture in Manhattan. Architect Louis Korn designed the structure with elaborate stone and terra cotta detailing that reflects the influence of the pioneering Chicago architect Louis Sullivan. If you look closely at the facade, you can see swirling ornamental columns that alternate between spiraling lines and clinging vines, leading up to an arcaded seventh floor finished with a detailed metal cornice.
