Union Square, Manhattan

The equestrian statue of George Washington standing at the southern end of the park holds a unique place in New York City history. Dedicated in 1856, it was the first public sculpture erected in the city since the original statue of King George the Third was torn down in 1770. Sculptor Henry Kirke Brown created it to depict Washington at the moment he reclaimed the city from the British in 1783, and it remains the oldest statue in the entire New York City park system.
