White Horse Tavern (New York City)

The White Horse Tavern has occupied this corner of Hudson and West Eleventh Streets since eighteen eighty. It began as a neighborhood watering hole for longshoremen working the nearby Hudson River piers, but by the mid-twentieth century, it transformed into a sanctuary for writers, poets, and political radicals. The tavern remains one of the oldest continuously operating bars in New York City, still featuring its original mahogany bar and pressed tin ceilings that witnessed these shifts in the city's social fabric.
