William Sheridan Playground

William Sheridan Playground is named for a New York City police officer who gave his life during the First World War. William E. Sheridan was a Pennsylvania native who joined the police department in nineteen seventeen and served in Brooklyn. He later enlisted in the army and died from machine gun wounds during the Battle of the Argonne in nineteen eighteen, just weeks before the armistice. The playground was originally established in nineteen thirty-four as a memorial, funded by a war memorial trust to honor his sacrifice.
