The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum features a massive limestone facade modeled after the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Commissioned in nineteen oh six, the building honors the men of Allegheny County who served in the American Civil War. Its massive auditorium once hosted a lecture by Theodore Roosevelt, but the real story remains the thousands of personal artifacts inside, donated by families who kept their ancestors' uniforms and letters for over a century.
