The Stephen Foster Memorial features a tall, narrow gothic tower that rises above the surrounding University of Pittsburgh campus. It houses a theater and a museum dedicated to the composer of songs like Oh! Susanna. In the nineteen thirties, Josiah Kirby Lilly Junior donated his massive private collection of Foster sheet music and instruments to the university to create this space. He spent years tracking down original manuscripts that had been scattered across the country, saving them from being lost to time.
