St. Paul Cathedral

St. Paul Cathedral anchors Fifth Avenue with two massive, twin-towered spires made of light-colored limestone. Bishop John Tuigg commissioned this building in the eighteen-eighties to serve a growing immigrant population, intending it to demonstrate the prominence of the Catholic Church in the industrial heart of Pittsburgh. During the construction, a fire broke out that ruined the original roof and interior frames. Workers finished the structure in nineteen oh six, shifting the focus to a Gothic Revival style that dominates the skyline today.
