The Burleigh Beach platform rests on a foundation of jagged basalt rocks, marking the exact spot where the sand gives way to the headland. It serves as a fixed vantage point for lifeguards watching the break, which surfers often call the best right-hand point wave in the country. In the nineteen thirties, this area was mostly scrubland until local volunteers built a small timber lookout to keep watch over swimmers. It has since become the permanent command center for the Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Life Saving Club.
