Three giant arches joined by a curved colonnade dominate the skyline of the Cinquantenaire Park. King Leopold the Second commissioned this monument to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Belgian independence. The construction took decades, stalled by funding shortages and the death of the original architect. When the metal and stone finally came together in nineteen oh five, a massive bronze chariot driven by a figure representing Brabant was hoisted to the very top, crowning the central arch in high relief.
