Place du Luxembourg centers on a wide, stone-paved square dominated by a bronze statue of John Cockerill, the industrialist whose factories once powered the region. Behind the statue, the ornate, nineteenth-century facade of the Brussels-Luxembourg railway station greets commuters. Built in eighteen fifty-four as the terminus for the line connecting Brussels to Luxembourg, the station originally handled both passengers and heavy industrial freight. Trains once pulled directly into the square, turning this spot into a bustling hub for coal and steel transport.
