Brussel-Centraal

The brick facade of Brussel-Centraal features narrow, vertical windows and a repetitive rhythm that marks it as the work of Victor Horta. Construction dragged on for decades, starting in nineteen eleven but stalling through two world wars. By the time the station opened in nineteen fifty-two, Horta had been dead for five years. His assistant, Maxime Brunfaut, took over the project. Brunfaut kept the original aesthetic, though he simplified the interiors to fit the austere, post-war taste of the mid-twentieth century.
