The Kerk van Onze Lieve Vrouwe Ter Kapelle stands out in the Marolles for its mismatched profile, where a heavy, rounded Romanesque tower meets a slender, pointed Gothic spire. Built in the thirteenth century for pilgrims who could not make it to the city walls, it served as a chapel for travelers arriving after the gates had closed for the night. In sixteen oh eight, the painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder was buried here, though his original tombstone disappeared long ago.
