Square Patrice Lumumba

The Square Patrice Lumumba occupies a small, triangular patch of greenery tucked between the Saint-Boniface church and the surrounding limestone townhouses. It bears the name of the first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, an anti-colonial leader assassinated in nineteen sixty-one. For years, this site remained an unnamed public space until a local petition campaign successfully pushed the city to officially rename it in two thousand eighteen. A simple sign now stands here, marking the site’s connection to Lumumba’s legacy.
