Leopold Park

park garden

The iron fence of Leopold Park encloses a collection of nineteenth century buildings that once formed a private zoo. In eighteen fifty, the Royal Zoological Society of Brussels opened a collection of animals here, complete with a bear pit and an aviary. The venture folded within a few decades, leaving behind a manicured landscape that eventually became home to scientific institutes. The pond still follows the original path designed for Victorian visitors, while the surrounding trees hide the remains of those old cages.
