À la Bécasse

The facade of À la Bécasse features a pair of carved wooden woodcocks, or bécasses, mounted high above the entrance. This narrow, tile-walled tavern dates back to eighteen seventy-six, though the building itself occupies a much older foundation tucked into a slender alley off the main square. It built its reputation on serving Lambic and Gueuze beers drawn from wooden barrels. In nineteen ninety-eight, owner Jean-Pierre Dancot refused to modernize the interior, keeping the original rustic wooden benches and worn floors intact.
