A bronze bear cub sits on a granite pedestal in the center of Karhupuisto, its head tilted toward the sky. This park, known as the Bear Park, occupies the triangular intersection where Agricolankatu meets Castreninkatu. Sculptor Jussi Mantynen created the statue in nineteen thirty-one, positioning the animal to survey the surrounding Kallio district. While the neighborhood served as a gritty industrial center during the early twentieth century, the park provided a rare green opening for the local residents who crowded into the nearby apartments.
