Theatre of La Bastille

The Theatre of La Bastille occupies a former furniture factory. Its facade remains plain, characterized by large, glass-paned windows and industrial steel framing that blend into the ordinary apartment blocks of the eleventh arrondissement. Inside, the factory floor was gutted and converted into a flexible performance space in the early nineteen eighties. Jean-Marie Binoche transformed the workspace to prioritize intimacy between actors and the audience, deliberately removing the distance found in traditional, ornate Parisian theaters.
