La Petite Alsace sits behind a simple iron gate, hiding a cluster of forty timber-framed houses arranged around a communal garden. Built in nineteen twelve by an architect named Jean Walter, these homes provided affordable housing for Alsatian workers who moved to Paris for industrial jobs. Walter imported the specific architectural style of his home region to keep the migrants connected to their roots. The tiny cottages still stand today, shielded from the noise of the surrounding streets by their own internal courtyard.
