Pont Saint-Michel

landmark

The Pont Saint-Michel is distinguished by the golden N initials encircled by laurel wreaths embedded into its stonework. Completed in eighteen fifty-seven, this bridge replaced a medieval wooden structure that frequently collapsed under the weight of winter ice or simply rotted away. During the Algerian War in nineteen sixty-one, the bridge became the site of a brutal crackdown on protesters, an event that left a dark mark on the history of this crossing. It carries the marks of imperial ambition and violent memory.
