Hôtel de Bourgogne (theatre)

The Hôtel de Bourgogne features a high, timber-framed facade that dates back to the middle of the sixteenth century. It served as a theater for over one hundred and fifty years, hosting the first professional acting troupes in Paris. In sixteen thirty-four, the playwright Hardy premiered his works here, while later, Molière’s rival, the Comédie-Italienne, made the space their home. The building held the city's first permanent stage, establishing a tradition that transformed theater from a traveling spectacle into a fixed public institution.
