Notre-Dame-des-Victoires features a facade of dark, weathered stone that appears almost black against the surrounding buildings of the second arrondissement. King Louis the thirteenth commissioned the church in sixteen twenty-nine to celebrate the royal victory at the siege of La Rochelle. While the construction dragged on for decades, the interior eventually filled with hundreds of small votive plaques. These marble tablets line the walls, each one a handwritten thank-you note from a parishioner for a prayer they believe was answered.
