Fontaine Egyptienne dite du Fellah

The Fontaine du Fellah features a bronze statue of an Egyptian peasant holding two water jars, standing within a stone niche shaped like a temple gate. Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned the fountain in eighteen oh six to provide clean drinking water to the neighborhood after his Egyptian campaign sparked a craze for Orientalist style. The sculptor Pierre-Nicolas Beauvallet carved the figure to mimic ancient forms, yet the water flows from simple pipes tucked into the structure’s base rather than a grand, ornate basin.
