The Mineralogy Museum at the École des Mines occupies the first floor of the Hôtel de Vendôme, a seventeenth-century townhouse. Its most striking feature is the pair of grand, original galleries lined with floor-to-ceiling glass cabinets that hold over one hundred thousand mineral samples. During the French Revolution, the collection narrowly escaped destruction by being hidden away in the countryside. René-Just Haüy, the father of modern crystallography, later curated these specimens, establishing the scientific classification systems used by geologists today.
