Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes

The dome of Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes rises above the street, the first of its kind built in Paris. It sits atop the former convent of the Discalced Carmelites, founded in sixteen thirteen. During the September Massacres of seventeen ninety-two, the church floor became a slaughterhouse. Revolutionaries executed over one hundred priests here who refused to swear an oath to the new government. Today, the bones of those men rest in the crypt, hidden beneath the peaceful floorboards where the parishioners walk each Sunday.
