The bronze Statue of Liberty on the Île aux Cygnes stands one fourth the size of its famous sister in New York Harbor. It faces west toward the Atlantic, a gift from the American community in Paris to the city for the centennial of the French Revolution in eighteen eighty-nine. When sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi finished the full-scale statue for America, he provided this smaller version to Paris, cementing the cross-Atlantic exchange of ideas that fueled both republics at the time.
