Passage Verdeau wears a roof of slanted glass panels held up by a skeleton of spindly green ironwork. Built in eighteen forty-six, this gallery served as an extension of the nearby Passage Jouffroy, designed to keep shoppers dry and merchants busy as they moved goods toward the auction houses on Rue Drouot. Jean-Baptiste Ossude, the original architect, made the ceiling exceptionally high to ensure that even the darkest Parisian afternoons felt bright enough for collectors to inspect their stamps, books, and prints.
