Fontaine de la Régénération

The Fontaine de la Régénération consists of a plaster statue of the Egyptian goddess Isis, positioned where the Bastille prison once stood. In seventeen ninety-three, revolutionaries built this monument to celebrate the new constitution. Water poured from the breasts of the statue into a basin below, meant to symbolize the nourishment of the French people by the republic. The original structure stood for only a few years, as the materials weathered poorly, leaving behind only memories of a fleeting revolutionary dream.
