Square Jules-Ferry

The Square Jules-Ferry sits directly atop the tunnel where the Canal Saint-Martin flows underground. You can identify it by the long, elevated promenade shaded by mature chestnut trees, which effectively hides the dark waters rushing beneath the pavement. In the late nineteenth century, city planners capped this section of the canal to ease traffic flow and create space for markets. Merchants once sold everything from fresh produce to hardware here, turning this quiet walkway into a bustling center for neighborhood trade.
