The path you are approaching is the Petite Ceinture, a defunct circular railway that once formed a tight belt around the city of Paris. Built in the mid nineteenth century under the direction of Napoleon the Third and Baron Haussmann, the line was initially intended to supply the city's defensive fortifications and connect the major train stations scattered across the capital. While its primary purpose was military and logistical, it soon transformed into an essential commuter route for Parisians, effectively serving as an early, above-ground precursor to the modern metro system.
