The Lapin Agile began its life with much darker associations than its current name suggests. In the mid nineteenth century, the building operated under the name Cabaret des Assassins, or the Assassins Cabaret. Local lore claims the name originated after a violent robbery occurred on the premises, resulting in the death of the owner's son. The walls were once decorated with portraits of infamous criminals, leaning into a grim reputation that stood in stark contrast to the lively artistic hub it would eventually become.
