The Theatre des Bouffes du Nord was built in 1876 on the site of an abandoned military barracks. In its early years, it struggled to attract a steady audience due to its distance from the fashionable districts of Paris. The venue changed management fifteen times in its first decade alone, and its history includes a famous incident where one director fled the theater with the entire contents of the building safe after a production failed.
