hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau

historic

The Hôtel de Mercy-Argenteau was built in 1778, serving as a private mansion for the Austrian ambassador to France, Florimond-Claude, Count of Mercy-Argenteau. This diplomat acted as a mentor and secret advisor to Queen Marie-Antoinette, having negotiated her marriage to the future King Louis XVI. Because of this intimate proximity to the throne, the ambassador often found himself at the center of the royal family's most private and sensitive affairs.
