Fondation Custodia

The Fondation Custodia occupies a nineteenth century private mansion characterized by a row of tall, rectangular windows and a muted, cream-colored stone facade. It houses the vast private collection of Frits Lugt, a Dutch art historian who began buying drawings at age twenty-one. During the second World War, Lugt hid his entire inventory in a chateau to protect it from the occupation. Today, the mansion functions as a center for the study of works on paper, displaying fragile sketches alongside historical Dutch paintings.
