Galerie des machines

stadium

You are approaching a site where a structure once stood that surpassed even the nearby Eiffel Tower in scale and ambition during the eighteen eighty-nine World Fair. The Galerie des Machines was an architectural marvel that stretched over a quarter-mile in length and spanned nearly four hundred feet without a single interior support column. It utilized massive iron arches, hinged at the ground and at the roof peak, to create an unobstructed cathedral of industry that felt like a glimpse into a futuristic world. While the tower remains as a global icon, this gallery was demolished in nineteen ten to restore the open view across the Champ de Mars, leaving behind only the memory of its vast, glass-roofed interior.
