Galerie Véro-Dodat was created in eighteen twenty-six by two unlikely real estate moguls who were actually wealthy pork butchers. These men, Benoit Véro and François Dodat, capitalized on the desperate need for a dry, elegant shortcut between the busy markets of Les Halles and the aristocratic center of the Palais-Royal. By building this glass-roofed arcade, they provided a refined escape from the mud and chaos of Parisian streets, quickly turning their investment into a lucrative hub for fashion and commerce. The design used clever architectural tricks, including diagonal black and white floor tiles and specialized lighting, to create a persistent illusion of depth that makes the relatively short passage feel like an infinite, polished hallway.
