Pletzl

The Pletzl is marked by narrow, winding streets like Rue des Rosiers, where the architecture feels compressed and distinct from the wide boulevards elsewhere in Paris. This neighborhood became the heart of the city’s Ashkenazi Jewish community beginning in the late nineteenth century. Families fleeing persecution in Eastern Europe settled here, opening small tailor shops and kosher bakeries. During the occupation, the area suffered terrible losses, but it remains a place where the cultural footprint of those families persists in the local storefronts.
