Number fifty-one Rue de Montmorency is a narrow, stone-fronted house that holds the title of the oldest dated building in Paris. Built in fourteen oh seven, the house served as a residence and workshop for the alchemist Nicolas Flamel. People believed Flamel discovered the secret to turning base metals into gold, a myth fueled by his sudden immense wealth. He used his fortune to commission this structure to house the poor, leaving his name carved into the stone lintel above the ground floor entrance.
