Halle aux blés (Paris)

The circular stone building with the glass dome at the center of the former grain market is the Bourse de Commerce. It replaced an open-air wheat exchange that became too crowded for the city to manage. In seventeen eighty-three, architect Nicolas Le Camus de Mézières enclosed the market with a pioneering iron-and-glass dome, a marvel for its time. When the grain trade moved elsewhere, the structure shifted through several incarnations, including a headquarters for the chamber of commerce and an art museum.
