The Holy Innocents' Cemetery is marked by the lack of any headstones or open graves today, yet for centuries it was the primary burial ground of Paris. The pressure of thousands of bodies stacked in communal pits caused the surrounding walls to collapse into the cellars of nearby residents in seventeen eighty. Diggers moved millions of skeletal remains to the subterranean quarries that became the Catacombs. Beneath the bustling market square, the earth still holds the traces of a medieval city buried underfoot.
